Promotion Creativity

Among those excellent works of advertising, we found this IKEA Curtains Trailer from Ciloawards.com to be very creative and impressing. This ad was awarded the Silver pride in the Innovative Media category.

From our points of view, the reason why this ad won this award is because of its creativity. The Ikea In Hong Kong has found a very original but creative way to promote their range of curtains by using a movie screen in theaters. We are amazed by the creativity of this Advertising: simple, surprising, funny, and unforgettable. Audiences would never expect to see more than one curtains in a theatre before a movie. However, the audience began to be curious that ,when the music started why came another curtain, instead of the screen, and why it’s not a single colored curtain, the theater must be doing something wrong. And again, another colored curtain, again, another colored curtain, before finally comes the screen with a tagline “Ikea Present”. At this point, the audience began to laugh. They got the meaning finally and happily.

We think this ad was honored for its creative merit mostly. Marketing professionals of Ikea are very creative and they just found the Inherent Drama that involves innate characteristic of the product that can’t easily acquire without thinking provokingly. Plus Ikea picked a great place and right occasion to present its ads, not in TV, not on internet but on the theater. Audience did not feel abrupt but surprised and happy. In addition, as this ad brought good image of Ikea and positive feeling of the audience, it is safe to say that this ad would also improve Ikea’s ability to sell its curtains as well as other products. Although it’s difficult to know the cost of this advertisement, from our points of view, it might be more cost-effective than traditional ads on TV.

“Google Chrome Speed Tests” campaign won the silver price of CLIO Awards in 2011. The whole campaign includes a serious of “speed test” ads, banner ads on major site, social media ads and game associated with Chrome.

As for the “Speed test” ads, it include compared with potato, sound waves and lightning. What we want to talk about, at first, are that this commercial tell us the speed of Chrome in a very innovative way through beating sound and lightning. It even wins the sound and lightning, so other browsers, who can become its competitors? The answer is No! Second, the single appeal is important because customers may lose many points when they seeing a commercial. This ad of Google’s Chrome has only one appeal, the fastest speed. So we believe all of us will remember the Chrome is very faster than other browsers after we saw this commercial. At last, we want to talk about details. A good idea may not lead to success because it depends on how to implement this idea. In this ad, Google elaborately design three tests in order to make them more interesting and unforgettable. At the end of commercial, we can see this” The internet, Chrome fast.” Also to make sure it is convictive to customers, Google adds this” Test it for yourself” as the end of commercial. With these efforts they really got results what they want.

Google successfully make a serious of “speed test” ads to demonstrate how fast Chrome is. The ads itself is interesting enough to attract the eye of audiences and encourage them to search more detail about the speed test. An attractive advertisement was only the first step in the marketing campaign. After that, Google took banner advertisement to the Internet, covering the major sites such CNN, Digg, Twitter. And Also Google creatively inserted interesting game into its marketing campaign. These games were creatively designed, demonstrating the fast speed idea and attracting attention at meantime. In addition, Google successfully involved social media and YouTube into the campaign. “Speed test” not only attracted audience to find more detail, but also made Chrome a booming topic. Everyone was talking about the interesting test and game about Chrome at that time. The idea of “fastest Chrome” was just like virus, which quickly spread in the social network. With the help of social media and YouTube, Google successfully target the young generations who like cool ideas and like try new thing. 1. Really love the Google commercial!!The commercial is obviously technology fans targeted. The innovations in this commercial are luxuriant. It gives out three clear measurements to show how fast the Chrome browser is. Relating an object that can't be seen or measured by real measurements to something people can perceive directly by visual sense is a brilliant idea. However, one drawback of this commercial that I can think of is that the commercial is too technical that can't draw attentions from people other than that.

  2. This one is so cool. One thing this commercial points out is the speed of Chrome. This is one of the most important aspects consumers look for a browser. Google also let Chrome appears in the commercial a couple of times.Google directly tells us what is Chrome and how it looks like. I think this is necessary for a product at the early stage in its life cycle.

  3. the chrome commercial is really cool, which transfer something abstract, the speed of a browser into something visual and touchable, by comparing the speed of chrome with sound, light, etc, which are all high speed things.
I've also scanned several other chrome commercials, all aiming at its outstanding speed and stability. the common character of chrome's commercials is expressing the concept of speed in very creative way, which is really impressive

  4. As a personal user and fan of google chrome, I will say that this commercial really hits the nail on the head in demonstrating the speed of using this browser. My personal favorite was the potato fry cutter mechanism test vs the speed google chrome gets to a recipe to make fries. The speed to actually make fries at a quick speed is only matched by that of google chrome's speed in finding the appropriate recipe.

Now, as for the IKEA commercial, I thought it was an interesting take on displaying shower curtain/regular curtain "coutoure" in a movie theatre type setting. It really builds the hype for the product, as well as for IKEA products in general. Showcase your home with these curtains! (and the rest of our products too!)

  5. Yes, I remember this commercial! It was released just after Chrome's launch, I think. At the begiining, Chrome was described as a neat and fast browser. And when this ad came up, it really made audience imagine the speed of Chrome, and users grew rapidly. However, this ad is a little bit just for engineer, since all the machines and ideas appeared in the commercial. Anyway, I love this ad from the very beginning and think it is indeed creative.

Selling message are directly to audiences. The commercial is creative and impressive.

  7. In IKEA advertisement, the IKEA ad message has been executed with creativity. Targeted audience are the ones who have leisure time to watch movie in theater. Those are the people who are interested in decorating homes in their Leisure time and they need Curtains which is readily available in IKEA. Creative Tactics for TV is used accurately with proper Audio and Video.

Now when it comes to Google Ad, team searched for major selling idea and figured our "Speed Test" - used this as Unique selling proportion. Though out the advertisement , unrelated items are compared to proved that Google is faster than speed of light and speed of sound.

  8. Google speed test shows how fast and unique experience they bring to the web user. This ad gives a whole new meaning to lightning fast. I like the creativity in attracting consumers by showing the music experience and other sorts of routine life examples that tends people to use the browser. Also this was not a demonstration of how fast the data transfer is from the server to the PC across the internet but it is a demonstration of how fast the browser can render code and present the text and images to the screen within the blink of eye. The main theme of this browser is to remove the network from the equation and show the power of the browser.

  9. The first commercial is interesting. When I was wondering whether the theater is doing something wrong, and why the same music repeat several times, the IKEA icon comes out. it is so simple and clear that make everyone finally realize the advertisement. My curiosity makes me want to find out what is happening on the screen and could not move my eyes anywhere else. The advertisement successufully hold everyone's attention on the curtain. It is creative indeed.

  10. I love the Ikea ad! It makes you feel like you're in a broadway theater (or live theater) and creates a sense of nostalgia. Then you're semi-confused/intrigued by the repeated curtain pulls before you realize its an Ikea ad. Very well done.

  11. I really like the IKEA's curtain commercial. IKEA shows audiences the real products that it wants to promote. Maybe at first, audiences are just confused like what I thought when seeing several curtains. But after the screen shows "IKEA present", people will all understand the meaning of curtains. What's more, audiences are impressed with such a promotion campaign, and they will come back home telling their families or their friends about this funny promotion. In the end, IKEA successfully promotes its products not only to the audiences in the theater but also people outside the theater. ---Chenlu Lou

    1. Yep! I totally agree. At first, I am a little concerned about the amount of audience this ad could reach. However, I believe that people who experienced such a special commercial would definitely tell their friends and family members about it, which in return would bring more Ikea customers.

  12. I love the Chrome commercial! It was awesome! The commercial utilized the interesting technologies to measure speed that we could not see in the daily life. And compared the speed of the fast things we could imagine with the speed of Chrome that we could not measure before. It was creative and very fancy! And the funnies part of the commercial, I think, is that after the slow motion of every experiment, the flash action of every experiment without any music. We can see the flash of the potato, sound waves and light, as well as the fast speed of Chrome at a very short period. This was very impressing.

  13. The IKEA one is excellent. I really like it. I think the reason why it's creative is that IKEA uniquely shows its advertisements as a trailer. It's different from the traditional video one. Nor does IKEA show the adv through posters. The vivid show of different curtains in theaters before the film will of course leave a deep impression on audiences' minds. Nice choice!

  14. Wow, it is so amazing. What I confront with is not just the boring experiments, the speed match between Chrome and other kinds of things is creative. It does not just present and demonstrate how fast the Chrome is, through comparison could make audiences get familar with the performance of the Chrome.

  15. IKEA ad is really creative. In theater, commercial always showed on the screens. However, this ad use the stage and curtain to show a ad. It's really surprised and impressive. We can see that a lot of audience smiled after seeing this ad. They will remember this ad deeply. But I am wondering how much this ad would cost. More expansive or cheaper than the traditional big screen ads?

  17. IKea's Ad is funny. But I know what it will be after two curtains are pulled open. So I just wonder is that Ad really good?(from the point of art, not from the effective of the selling and sales) Or the numbers of curtains showed up in this Ad are too many?

  19. I like these two ads very much, it's indeed smart to show the valuable information about the products. In Ikea ad, the real scenario could make audience to experience the ad in a real world, which is touchable and realistic. Every audience was waiting for the result from the changes of curtains, and later it did not disappoint audience and also show the positive image of Ikea. In chrome ad, it's very creative to compare the speed of chrome with that of light, sound, and so on. It focus on the most impressing feature of chrome and also could enable audiences to feel directly speed from comparing with one common thing, which we could have a direct image of that in daily life.
